Avoiding the Dark Side to Achieve Success

After making it through another massive working week, I reached the weekend completely and utterly exhausted. On Saturday I had work to catch up on however, I was so wrecked that my efforts were unproductive. Frustrated, I began to mentally beat myself up for not getting my work done. I felt anxious about how busy the coming week will be, I grew stressed and my thoughts headed into a dark space. It didn’t stop here. I worried about my finances and all sorts of worst case scenarios. I questioned my goals and my entire direction in business and in life (dramatic but I’m sure you’ve all been there).

Oh yes, I had crossed over to the dark side.

A couple of hours later and still moping, Jodi (my girlfriend) was listening to some sort of “self help” download. I have read and listened to loads of self help stuff but I was in absolutely no mood for it. Just when I was about to leave the room the soothing fatherly voice of a guy named Earl Knightingale flowed from the speakers.

He was harping on about how humans only use 10% off their brains and that for thousands of year’s philosophers and prophets have argued on almost everything but this one point:

“We become what we think about. Everyone is the sum of their thoughts”.

In my filthy mood I thought “here we go, positive thinking rubbish” (I’m sure some of you just thought the same thing).

Earl then goes on to say that if we think in negative terms we will achieve negative results and in turn, if we think in positive terms we will achieve positive results. (See, positive thinking rubbish).

Just when I’d heard about all I could take, Earl told a story that compared the human mind to fertile land. He talks of a farmer who plants two seeds, one is corn and the other nightshade (a deadly poison). The fertile land grows each of these seeds equally. Earl argues that the mind is the same as the land. As with the land, the mind does not care what you plant in it. It will however, return whatever you plant in it.

Now only slightly sceptical I’m thinking “mmm, maybe this guys onto something”

I listened to the rest of the down load and by the end I had returned from the dark side to a much happier place. I figure that we all probably go to the dark side from time to time. When you do, I’d recommend giving Earl Nightingale a go.

Here are some of the main points, statements and quotes from the down load:

  • Stop thinking about what it is you fear
  • Act as though it was impossible to fail
  • Look for the circumstances you want and if you can’t find them, make them
  • Success is a progressive realisation of a worthy ideal
  • As ye sow, so shall ye reap
  • Your financial reward will be in direct proportion to your service

Wise Earl suggests that you take a 30 day challenge, which I am doing right now. I will let you know how it goes next issue.

This issue's article is from Judy Kater, our Meditation Guru.

Meditation is personal, which style is right for you?

Styles of meditation vary depending on what the mind is trained to focus on - the body, the breath, a word, an object, a sound, an action, mindfulness of the present moment, and so on. Some techniques are inward focused, other techniques are outward focused and several are a combination of both. Some techniques are passive while others are more active. Techniques also vary depending on their visual, auditory or kinaesthetic focus...
